‘One Life’ director predicts AI-generated shows ‘inevitable,’ could be here in 3-5 years

Director James Hawes, who has worked with famous actors and on popular series, is worried about how AI will affect movies and TV shows, saying that AI-made content is coming soon, within three to five years.

Hawes' concern is that AI can now turn simple written prompts into complex scenes - see ChatGPT's upcoming Sora release, which can create up to a minute of video from a single prompt. The current use of AI to produce films remains impractical.

For example, one would have to create thousands of images and extend them with tools like Runway and Pika AI before dropping them into an editing program like iMovie in the right sequence to then add in the soundtrack from a tool like ElevenLabs that could theoretically be used to dub actors' voices over the images.

But with Sora being able to produce stunning videos of up to a minute, it's only a matter of time before the process gets a lot simpler. Hawes insists that human creativity is something AI can't replace, but he does suggest a balanced future for filmmaking, with AI helping but not taking over. He also wants the UK's film and TV industry to help creatives learn about AI, similar to what American guilds are doing to protect artists and writers in the AI era.

Wix’s new AI chatbot builds websites in seconds based on prompts

Wix has introduced an AI-powered website builder that enables users to create websites using simple prompts. This innovative tool allows for the creation of websites free of charge, although upgrading to a premium plan is necessary for advanced features like payment acceptance and custom domain usage. Wix's pricing structure ranges from $17 to $159 per month, offering varying levels of storage, collaboration, and marketing tools.

To build a site, users engage with a chatbot, answering questions about the site's name, purpose, and objectives. The AI then quickly generates a website, which can be further customized through theme and layout adjustments. Wix incorporates AI technology, including DALL-E for image creation and ChatGPT for text, to enhance the site-building process.

Initial results may not fully meet user expectations, and require further edits to achieve the desired look and functionality. Despite this, the tool greatly simplifies the process of creating a website, while offering a user-friendly platform for both novices and experienced individuals seeking to establish an online presence.

AI Word of the Day: Knowledge Distillation

Knowledge Distillation is a technique in machine learning where knowledge from a large, complex model (teacher) is transferred to a smaller, simpler model (student).

The goal is to improve the performance of the student model by teaching it to mimic the output distributions of the teacher model. This process enables the smaller model to achieve higher accuracy than would be possible if it were trained on the training dataset alone.

Why It Matters

Knowledge distillation is crucial for deploying AI models in environments where computational resources are limited, such as mobile devices or embedded systems.

It allows the benefits of large, powerful models to be distilled into more compact models that require less memory and computational power, making AI accessible and practical for real-time applications.

This technique is widely used in fields like computer vision and natural language processing to create efficient models that do not compromise performance.

Real-World Example

In speech recognition on smartphones, a highly accurate but large model trained in the cloud can act as the teacher, and a much smaller model deployed on the device serves as the student.

Through knowledge distillation, the compact model learns to perform speech recognition tasks nearly as well as the larger model but with a fraction of the computational requirements.

This enables high-quality, real-time speech recognition on mobile devices, enhancing user experience by allowing for fast and accurate voice commands without the need for constant internet connectivity.
