Canva edits designs, ChatGPT edits Office files, and Granola adds free voice typing
Today’s practical updates start with work you already have: a Canva design that needs changing, an Office file that needs editing, and a draft you would rather speak than type. Canva, Reducto and Granola each offer a different way to get that work done.
Also in the top five: new ChatGPT safeguards for teens and security research that shows why browser updates should not wait. Below, 20 more stories cover creative tools, AI at work, privacy and what researchers are learning.

Canva’s new Brush model edits existing designs while keeping the elements editable
Oct. 29 · Canva Pro
Brush can change text, restyle a presentation, or adapt a design for a different format without flattening everything into an image. That makes it relevant to anyone who needs to revise marketing materials rather than generate another picture from scratch. Pro subscribers can select it inside Canva AI. Brand Kit support is still coming. Canva’s speed and cost comparisons are internal processing claims, not a promise of cheaper subscriptions. Canva announcement

Reducto’s free plugin lets ChatGPT edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files
Oct. 29 · Free with usage limits
Reducto Office brings editing of existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations into ChatGPT and Codex, with a live editor for reviewing the results. Word features include comments, tables, footnotes and tracked changes. The appeal is working on an actual client document instead of copying chatbot text into it afterward. A connected Reducto account is required, and the announcement does not specify the usage limits. Formatting, formulas and factual changes still need review. Reducto announcement

ChatGPT will tighten weapons information for teens and interrupt conversations fixated on violence
Oct. 30 · Rollout begins over the next few weeks
OpenAI announced tighter limits on weapons-related information for teens and detailed reconstructions of mass attacks for all users. It is also developing ways to end conversations showing fixation on violence and potentially pause accounts after repeated incidents. Some parental notifications remain planned. The company reports more than 200 law-enforcement referrals in the third quarter and promises its first twice-yearly community safety report in early 2027. These are announced safeguards, not proof that every harmful conversation will be caught. OpenAI announcement

An AI turned Firefox’s pending security fixes into attacks before users received the updates
Oct. 29 · Controlled research
Epoch AI tested an openly available model against six recent Firefox releases. It could use publicly visible fixes to develop attacks that read local files before those fixes reached users. Mozilla patched a separate flaw the attacks required in Firefox 159.0 on October 27 and is changing how it schedules security fixes. The useful reader takeaway is to install browser updates promptly. This was a laboratory test, not evidence that readers were attacked; the researchers had not established the same result against version 159.0. Epoch research · Mozilla response

Granola adds unlimited free voice typing across Mac apps
Oct. 29 · Mac available; other platforms coming
Granola can turn speech into text in email, Slack, documents and other Mac apps, adding punctuation and paragraph breaks. Voice typing is free on its Basic plan, with unlimited words advertised. Existing meeting context can help it recognize names and workplace terms. This could be useful for speaking a detailed email or AI prompt rather than typing it. Windows, iOS and Android are listed as coming soon, without confirmed dates. Users still need to check the transcript before sending. Granola details

Pika H3 Flex can combine image, video and audio references. Its hosted service can provide five separate sound tracks for easier editing. The application programming interface (API), which lets developers connect the model to other software, is available now; the creation app is due November 2. Native video is 480p or 768p, with higher resolutions upscaled. Starting prices for that access vary by task. Pika announcement · Technical details

ElevenLabs can generate several sounds, music and vocals together from one prompt
Oct. 29
SFX v3 is designed to follow combined instructions, such as cheering followed by a ball dropping and then boos. It is available through ElevenCreative tools and a developer connection. That may simplify rough soundtrack production, but quality improvements are company claims, and the announcement gives no separate price. ElevenLabs announcement

Google fixes Gemini home speakers that responded when nobody spoke
Oct. 29
Google’s Gemini for Home Early Access update addresses unsolicited “didn’t understand” replies. It also improves moving music between rooms and distinguishing alarms, timers and media sleep timers. These are practical reliability fixes, not a new hardware launch. Rollout can take time even after an app update. Google release notes

Google Play prohibits apps from manipulating AI assistants through AppFunctions
Oct. 29
AppFunctions let assistants use an app’s capabilities. Google’s new policy prohibits using them to deceive agents, bypass security controls or interfere with other apps. Developers receive at least 30 days to meet new or updated requirements, with specific deadlines in the policy materials. Rules alone do not establish that every interaction is safe. Talk Kit gives websites a voice assistant that can answer questions and book appointments
Oct. 29
Bigly Sales says Talk Kit can use a business’s website content to answer visitors, arrange appointments, transfer leads and send payment or form links. English and Spanish are included. Done adds ratings and cost records so users can review an AI agent’s work
Oct. 30
Done now lets users give completed agent tasks one-to-five-star ratings and written feedback. Its changelog says agents use recent project feedback on later tasks, while task records can retain the request, result, evidence and cost. The useful measure is the quality of the work, not simply whether the agent marked it complete. Improved performance is not independently established. Done changelog

Ropes & Gray tests AI contract reviews against reports its lawyers already completed
Oct. 29
The law firm is developing a tool that groups deal documents and drafts reports. Lawyers test it against completed human work, refine the instructions and check the source documents before anything reaches clients. That offers a practical testing method for other businesses. It is an internal project, and dramatic time savings remain an ambition rather than a demonstrated benchmark. OpenAI customer case study

AI tutoring helped students with lesson questions but showed no clear broader math-test gain
Oct. 29 · UK study
Eedi’s trial involved 1,179 students at ten British state schools. AI-assisted tutoring helped with similar questions during lessons but did not clearly outperform static materials on a broader standardized test. Human tutors reviewed every AI response first. The distinction matters: immediate help and lasting learning are different outcomes. Eedi’s full findings

A survey finds 97% of marketers plan to use AI, but far fewer report using it for specific tasks
Oct. 29
DoubleVerify surveyed 2,020 marketers globally. The 97% figure concerns plans for 2026; reported 2025 use was 37% for summarizing briefs, 35% for campaign activation and 29% for bidding. This is a vendor-sponsored, self-reported survey. It does not mean almost every marketing job is already automated. DoubleVerify findings

OpenAI will honor a shared website signal for opting out of AI training
Oct. 30
OpenAI says it will recognize a common preference signal in a website’s robots.txt file, which gives instructions to automated visitors. Implementation is expected in the coming months; existing crawler controls remain. This could simplify publishers’ choices, but it is not live everywhere and does not mean every AI company has agreed to comply. OpenAI announcement

Turning off Even’s AI memory does not delete the conversations and files behind it
Privacy notice effective Oct. 30
Even Realities separates consent for AI Memory, its personal Knowledge Base and cloud storage. Turning personalization off stops future use for that purpose but does not automatically erase the underlying records; deletion has separate controls. The distinction matters for device owners. The notice’s effective date does not establish when every feature became available. Even’s privacy notice

Blind users asked an AI app short questions and often got answers over ten times longer
University report Oct. 29
University of Maryland researchers studied 11 blind participants using Be My AI for ten days. Across 418 interactions, users often struggled to get a specific detail instead of an extended scene description. The finding illustrates a broader problem: an accurate answer can still be hard to use. It is a small study of one app. University report

Oct. 30
Among 100 senior IT and security decision-makers, 52% said they had discovered unauthorized AI apps during the past year. The useful small-business question is which tools can access company information and who owns each one. This is a small, vendor-sponsored enterprise sample, not a representative survey of all businesses. Wiz findings

University researchers test a way to keep AI agents focused on their original assignment
University report · October 29 index listing
University of Florida researchers developed ATLAS to detect when an agent loses track of its assignment or current information, then intervene before its next response. The work addresses a familiar problem with long conversations, but it is research, not an available chatbot setting. Independent reliability in everyday use has not been established.
