AI Brings With It 'Identity Collapse': 2 Things You Can Do to Fight Back

Picture an operating room where every surgeon is also the patient, and the procedure is self-replacement.

That’s how executive coach Joe Hudson describes life inside OpenAI’s leadership circle. In a recent interview on AI & I from Every, Hudson likened the march toward artificial general intelligence to a mass delivery room: the tech is being born, but everyone in the room is simultaneously giving birth to something that might take their own job.

Instead of clutching his clipboard and panicking, Hudson is asking the braver question: Who am I becoming while the machine comes online?

His answer winds through grief, freedom, and a full-body definition of intelligence—head, heart, and gut working in concert.

There's a lot there to unpack, and I think we owe it to ourselves to do that. Two things, in particular, caught my attention and forced me to go through the obstacle course.

1. Identity Checkpoints

AI has already rewired my communications workflow at the Police Department and in my newsletter and consulting business.

Rather than wasting so much time on questions like, “Does this press release or email sound professional enough?” I turn that part over to the model and zoom out to bigger questions:

• Will this statement inspire trust, anger, or pride in our community?
• What ripple effects will it have on the department, the city, or my clients?

Freedom to obsess over substance is the upside.

The downside shows up in work where style is substance—writing fiction, sharing inside jokes or funny social media posts.

Who hasn't had a killer joke murdered by autocorrect?

In moments like that, AI stops being a partner and starts acting like an overzealous copy editor.

A couple of workarounds:

First, a context radar that spots real-world implications behind every line. Second, a substance-first mindset that refuses to let polish outrank purpose.

AI can mimic tone; it can’t (yet) replicate that contextual X-ray vision. That’s the bit that feels irreplaceable.

2. Sitting in the Unknown, and Training for Uncertainty

I’m certain of exactly one thing: I’m uncertain.

Automation steamrolled factory floors; now it’s sprinting through white-collar corridors. I’m still employed and surfing the wave, but each week the swell gets steeper.

Humans can’t evolve at the same speed as AI. We may be "ahead" right now, but the gap is closing rapidly.

That said, these three anchors are keeping me from panic mode:

• Voice & perspective. Algorithms can mirror tone, but they struggle to own a point of view. Crafting a recognizable personal brand rooted in something real feels like a long-term moat.
• Journaling. Pen and paper are slow on purpose. The deliberate pace lets half-formed fears stretch out and show their real shape before I translate them into strategy.
• Running. No screens, no notifications—just breathing and asphalt. Time doing nothing gives you a chance to really think. Inside the box, outside the box. Getting my body moving and my thoughts away from electronics helps me come up with some of my most useful ideas more than AI ever could.

The real discipline is protecting our analog margins. When the calendar crowds them out, uncertainty morphs into anxiety, but by honoring that time in the unknown, uncertainty turns into raw material for growth.

So, Who Are We Becoming?

Hudson says identity collapse can be freeing—if we let it. I’m betting that freedom comes from two relentless practices:

1. Interrogate substance. Let AI polish, but never outsource the why.
2. Cultivate voice. Algorithms can't live your life for you. So get out there, and do just that.
