The Longer We Go As Humans, ASI Doesn't Sound So BadThe cowardly, cold-blooded murder of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday, Sept. 10, feels like a turning point for humans, and not a good one. I'm talking about it here today because writing is one of the ways I work things out in my head when I'm feeling troubled. And watching the sheet of blood cascade down Charlie's shirt on Wednesday left me scarred in a way that I'm still trying to figure out. Maybe by the end of this, I'll be closer to it than I am now. I hope so. I didn't really know much about Charlie Kirk before a chickenshit's bullet ended his life yesterday. I knew he was conservative, but I'd never watched any of his stuff. What I did know is that he took a stand, and whenever you do that, Right or Left, Correct or Incorrect, you're bound to make enemies. But nothing ... NOTHING ... justifies the murder of another individual. That should be a universal belief shared by every free person. If you don't share it, then we should probably bring back mental institutions and shove you inside one. It's a basic part of the social contract. You cannot justify murder as a reaction to words. Period. If you do, no matter how just your cause may be, you do not deserve to be part of society. Sound harsh? IDGAF. So is putting a bullet in the neck of a man whose family watched on helplessly as it happened. Because you disagreed and were too much of a coward to attack his views, you attack the man instead. Of course, any follower of history knows this will only have the opposite effect that the gunman intended. Charlie's voice will grow far beyond what it was. I've listened to a few of his debates since it happened to see what he was about. Like many Americans, I agreed on some, disagreed on others. Sometimes strongly disagreed. But he, by God, had the right to espouse his views. That's how America works. That we're now in a place where such a simple premise of Free Speech cannot be agreed upon is an indication, to me, that it might not be such a bad thing if the robots took over. I'm 100% serious. If we can't agree to disagree, if every political debate is to end in accusations of "Nazi" or "Fascist" or "Communist" or "Socialist," just because you disagree with what someone is saying, we really don't deserve to be running this shitshow anymore. I'm disgusted by all of it. The violence, the political back-and-forth, the disregard for human life. Maybe it's time to turn this one over to the robots. Because nothing I ever watched in the Terminator was as scary as the disregard we now have for each other and the civility and values we supposedly used to share. Coming to that realization on a day like Sept. 11 only adds insult to the injury. But I guess that's where we are. Wherever "the robots" take us can't be much worse. The good news is that I think they can take us to some pretty great places. Artificial superintelligence (ASI), which would be a merger of robotics, generative AI, and machine learning, is moving us forward in ways that could be transformational. To healthcare, to the future of work, to creativity, leisure, prosperity, and longevity. We just need to get out of our way. Start focusing on things we agree on. Like making life better for everyone. But to do that, you have to value life in the first place. And from what I've seen on Facebook and other social networks in the last 24 hours, we aren't there yet. How do we get there?
