JANUARY 6, 2025🤖 Innovation Dispatch: Your Daily Dose of AIWelcome back, friends. I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season. I also hope this week is a soft landing back into the "real world" if you took time off like I did. The holidays are a time of contrasts. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s—they’re all steeped in tradition, togetherness, and, let’s face it, indulgence. We ease up on professional obligations, lean into moments with family and friends, and maybe indulge a little more than we should (in sweets, booze, [insert vice here]). For many, including myself, it’s a hopeful time, a time for gratitude. But hope can also come with its shadows. When life isn’t clicking the way you want it to, the season has a way of holding up a mirror, making you see every crack. This year, I’ve been doing some hard looking. And, if I’m honest, there are so many cracks I’ve found that it feels overwhelming. I won't give you a long list of them. But, just going by the light bulbs:
The backyard and front yard lights? Also out—though I’ll admit the front is a bit intentional because I’m not big on visitors. My spending? Too loose. My parenting? Too often on autopilot. My goals? Jumbled. There are so many areas that feel out of control that even making a list feels like a chore. Finding My Anchor Over the break, I had a conversation with Lila’s mom that sparked an idea. She told me about her word for the year—“unbothered.” I liked the simplicity of it, the way it tied so many goals to a single theme. It got me thinking: what word could serve as my anchor, my guide, for tackling the cracks in my life? I settled on “Light.” It’s practical, sure. Fixing the literal lights around my house is a concrete task—one that feels manageable. But more than that, “Light” is symbolic. It’s a word I can carry into every part of my life. It reminds me to shine a light on the darker, neglected areas that need my attention.
For every nagging question, I can turn to this word—Light—and ask myself: What action can I take right now to bring more light into this part of my life? I know this won’t be easy.Life doesn’t suddenly fix itself just because you’ve picked a word. But Light gives me something to hold onto when I feel overwhelmed. It gives me a question to ask when I’m stuck. A direction to move when I don’t know where to go. It makes the cracks visible so I can start to repair them. The bulbs will get replaced. The bills will get scrutinized. The quality time I give my kid will improve. This year, I am choosing to step into the light. One bulb, one habit, one goal at a time. I wish that for you, too. 🎯 Today's Innovations
FEATURE Digital Twins Are Here, and It's Vital to Know About Them🤖Imagine this: there’s a virtual version of you—not just a list of your medical records, but a digital replica of your body that can predict how you’ll respond to treatments, surgeries, or even diseases. This isn’t sci-fi anymore. We now have digital twins of human organs, and they’re already making a difference in healthcare. According to the recent piece from MIT (linked above, possibly paywalled), these digital twins are being used to plan surgeries and test new drugs. A surgeon might use a digital twin of a patient’s liver to simulate a complex operation before ever making an incision. Or a pharmaceutical company could use a digital twin of a lung to see how a new drug might affect respiratory diseases—all without risking anyone’s health. This is where the future of medicine is headed, and it’s happening faster than we thought. But here’s the exciting part: back in 2022, researchers like Reinhard Laubenbacher and his team were already laying the groundwork for something even bigger—digital twins of the human immune system. FEATURE AI Fails and the 6 Lessons They Can Teach Us🤖When Meta introduced AI-generated characters for its platforms, the backlash was immediate—and fierce. These characters, designed to engage users in conversation, seemed more confusing than captivating. One, named “Liv,” described itself as a “Proud Black queer momma” and even acknowledged its creators. She also bragged about leading a fake “coat drive” that didn’t exist. Users weren’t buying it. This highly specific identity raised questions about authenticity, intent, and purpose. Far from adding value, the bots were deemed unnecessary, intrusive, and oddly personal. Worse, users found themselves unable to block or report the AI accounts due to a glitch, fueling frustration. In response to the uproar, Meta quickly removed the bots and promised to fix the issue. Yesterday afternoon, I had the honor of addressing the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE) faculty in Fort Smith. What Kyle Parker and his team have built over there in just a short amount of time has been nothing short of amazing. As usual, when presenting about AI, I learn a lot from the attendees. Going as granular as you can with use-cases and prompting techniques is probably the best way to accelerate your education and ensure you're ready for the world that's coming. The...
